The people of two modern tribes-the Pima and the Tohono O’odham-are probably their descendants. Hohokam Park (pronounced HO-HO-COM) takes its name from some of the earliest residents of the Valley of the Sun: the Hohokam Indians, who occupied this. No one knows why they left or where they went. ![]() That evidence indicates a culture that began more than 3,000. By about 1100 the neighboring Ancestral Pueblo had taught the Hohokam how to build homes from bricks made of adobe (sun-baked clay).ĭuring the early 1400s the Hohokam abandoned their villages. Evidence of a culture from which the Hohokam may have evolved has been found in the Tucson basin. They made these houses by digging a shallow pit and covering it with a dome of wood and mud. The largest Hohokam settlement was located near what is now Phoenix, Arizona. They built wide canals from the Gila and Salt rivers to their fields so they would have enough water for farming. The soil where they lived was dry and sandy. They also grew cotton, which they wove into cloth. Their civilization lasted from around 300 CE to. 1950: Professional spring training first comes to Mesa, with the minor league. The Hohokam were a Native American culture once found in what is now southern Arizona and northern Mexico. 1921: Mesas first community ball field, Rendezvous Park, is constructed at what was then the corner of 2nd Street and Sirrine. 1877: The first party of Utah settlers establishes camp in what is now Mesa. ![]() They grew corn, beans, pumpkins, and squash. The Hohokam Indian civilization dominates central Arizona. The Hohokam got most of their food from farming. Beginning in the 12th century, the invasion of the nomadic Chichimec destroyed the Toltec hegemony in central Mexico. The Hohokam people lived in what is now Arizona from about 300 bce to about 1400 ce. The Hohokam culture was one of the first great Native American civilizations in what is now the United States. ![]()
